Basic Controls

Basic Map Controls

  1. Zoom Controls – Use these buttons to zoom in and out. You can also scroll using your mouse to zoom.
  2. Regions – Data is shown by shading different regions on the map. You have hover over any region to see its value.
  3. Control Panels – Use these buttons to view different controls related to the map.
  4. Legend

  1. Click on any regions to select them.

  3. If enabled on your account, you can save the map configuration for later.

Map Region Controls

To adjust what data is used for shading the regions on the map, you can use the map region controls. To access them click on the map icon in the bottom left corner.

  1. You can close the control panel by clicking the close button.
  2. Use this dropdown to select which type of geographic region is used.
  3. To combine multiple variables click here to open the the Composite Variable controls. (more on this below)
  4. Hovering here will show source information about the selected variable.
  5. Use this dropdown to select what data is used to color the map.
  6. Use this dropdown to select what scale you want to use for coloring.
    1. Absolute Values - Regions are all colored on a linear scale between the minimum and maximum values.
    2. Percentiles - Regions are grouped into percentiles, which are each colored.

Composite Variables

You can use the Composite Variable controls to combine multiple variable with different weightings. This allows you to identify more specific regions and populations.

Region Search

  1. Select the variables that you want to combine here.
  2. You can discard your changes and close the controls by clicking the close button.
  3. Once you have selected your variables, assign them each a weight. Variables are weighted relative to the others, so the value doesn’t matter as long as all the variables are weighted using the same scale.
  4. You can invert the weighting of any variable by toggling here.
  5. Click Ok to save your composite variable and apply it to the map.
  6. Click Cancel to discard your changes and close the controls.

Region Details

When you click on a single region, you can view information about it by clicking on the globe icon in the bottom left corner.

  1. The name of the selected region. You can click it to view more details about the region.
  2. The type of region that was selected.
  3. Basic information about the region.

Map Marker Controls

In addition to colored regions, you can display the locations of different entities on the map. Click the marker icon in bottom left corner to open the Map Marker Controls.

Region Search

  1. Click on this button to turn on the markers for an entity.
    1. Please note that rendering a large number of markers can significantly slow down your browser.
    2. If you have selected specific regions, then only markers within those regions will be shown.
  2. The number of entities in the data set based on the selection.
  3. Click here to create additional filters, limiting which markers will be shown. (More on this below)
  4. Click here to divide the markers into different groups, or buckets. (More on this below)

Entity Details

You can click on any marker to get additional details for it. Clicking on a marker automatically open up the details panel. You can also click on the pin icon in the bottom left corner to open the panel.

  1. Clicking on the marker opens the panel
  2. The name of the entity is shown. Clicking on it opens a new page with additional details. This may not apply to all entity types.

Creating Filters

When you click the filter button, it opens the Filter Controls.

  1. Click to remove an existing filter.
  2. Click to modify an existing filter.
  3. Existing filters are shown here.
  4. To create a new filter, start here by selecting which field will be tested.
  5. Select the type of test.
  6. Enter the value that will be tested.
  7. Click here to save and add the new filter.
  8. Click Ok to close the controls.

When you click the bucket button, it open the Bucket Controls.

  1. Edit the name of an existing bucket here.
  2. For buckets based on a numerical field, you can edit the range criteria.
  3. Click here to remove an existing bucket.
  4. For buckets based on a text field, you can edit the value that must match.
  5. To add new buckets, start here by selecting which field you want to bucket around.
  6. Click Add to create the new bucket. Please note that this may create more than one bucket based on the field that you selected.
  7. Click Apply to save your buckets and apply them to the markers on the map.
  8. Click Cancel to discard your changes and close the controls.

Search Controls

To help you identify specific data or entities, you can use the Search Controls. Click the search icon in the bottom left corner to open the controls.

  1. Enter your search in this prompt.
  2. Search results will be shown below.
  3. For entity results, you can click this Details button to view the details of the entity.
  4. If the entity marker is shown on the map, then you can click here to zoom in on and highlight the marker.
  5. The entity type.
  6. For region variables, you can click here to switch to using the listed variable.

Download Controls

You can use the map to target specific regions and entities. It is sometimes useful to download the underlying data of the map and entities. Click the download icon in the bottom left corner to open the Download Controls.

  1. Click here to download the map data. If you have selected certain regions then only data for those regions will be downloaded. Also, if you are using a composite variable, then the composite value is includes as well as the individual values of each variable.
  2. The number of regions that will be included in the download file.
  3. Click here to download entity data. If you have selected certain regions then only data within the regions will be downloaded. Also, any marker filters you created will be applied.
  4. The number of entities that will be included in the download file.
  5. You can also download the whole map as an image. Click here to do so.
